Fiat was founded in 1899 as Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino in Turin. In 1922, Germany was one of the first foreign markets in which the Group became involved with its own import company. Today, Fiat Group Automobiles Germany AG is based in Frankfurt am Main and is responsible for the Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat Professional, Abarth, Jeep and Mopar brands.

Fiat Group Automobiles employs around 360 people in Germany and generated revenues of €1.7 billion in 2013 with the sale of 96,000 vehicles. With over 1,000 locations, the sales and service network is one of the largest organizations in the automotive import sector. In addition to regional sales partners, the Motor Village represents the Group's brands in the Rhine-Main region.
