At a time when we know more about Bali, Brooklyn, or the Seychelles than we do about Höri, Bliesgau, and Upper Lusatia, renowned GEO and National Geographic photographer Peter Gebhard embarks on a very special journey of discovery: In his iconic VW bus “Erwin,” he drives once around Germany—18,000 kilometers along borders, coasts, contrasts, and stories.

On Fehmarn, Peter meets the legendary Charchulla twins, pioneers of windsurfing, 86 years old and still full of energy. Off Rügen, he accompanies the last fishermen on a herring catch out on the Baltic Sea, and on the Polish border, he experiences the harsh working world of the steelworks in Eisenhüttenstadt. In the Ore Mountains, he meets Lydia, who returned to her old home with her Kenyan husband and two children after leaving 20 years earlier due to a lack of prospects. In the Allgäu region, he accompanies the autumn cattle drive and meets Alfred, the last cowbell maker, who reflects on the simple life and the loss of traditions with wisdom and subtle humor.
In Kaiserstuhl, he helps with the grape harvest; in the Eifel, he chats with an old countess in her castle; and in the Rhineland, he meets a family that has successfully fought against lignite mining for years. In Duisburg, he meets genuine Ruhrpott originals at a drinking hall, third-generation German-Turks who live between two worlds: too foreign for some, too German for others – but firmly rooted in the region. From the vibrant metropolis of the Ruhr region, with its dense network of highways, steel, and inland ports, to the vastness of the Emsland region: there, Bulli “Erwin” befriends old biplane aircraft, and Peter spontaneously embarks on a vintage aircraft trip to the East Frisian Islands. At the mouth of the Weser, Peter sails with crab fishermen into the North Sea before driving “Erwin” back up north for the finale, to the wonderland of the Halligen islands in the Wadden Sea, embraced by the eternal rhythm of the tides.
